It seemed like all her life she had been hiding, from one thing or another. As a child, she had always been the tallest, towering over the boys. It wasn't easy to be inconspicuous when you loomed over the horizon like that, but she had managed, finding that if she concentrated hard enough, that if she wrapped herself in a cloak of thought, she could evade detection.

She had long since outgrown that phase-- she had had to, taking jobs that placed her in the public eye. Now the evading she did was different-- working in Hollywood, she had had to manipulate the truth, and she had felt very little guilt about it. So what if the movies she had publicized were crap? The worst that could happen would be some teenagers wasting $8 on some reheated juvenile comedy.

Now, though, she was dealing with the truth, and what she had to evade were questions that hit too close to home. Once in awhile, she wished that when she was answering questions about World War Three, she was being asked about the next summer blockbuster.

Not often.

At the moment, though, Danny Concannon was approaching her. She sighed. It wasn't just that she was the White House Press Secretary and he was a reporter; it was that he wanted something she just couldn't give.

So once more, she began evasive maneuvers, and shot him down with a smile.
